The 2018 Black Label collection: An outerwear style guide
10 Feb 2018
The SS18 Black Label collection has been inspired by the legends and icons of the mid to late 60s ‘Peacock Revolution’. By straying from the norm, discarding the rulebook and walking a road less travelled, the legacy they’ve left behind is one that has proved to be timeless.
However, we can all do with a few handy hints and tips when it comes to style. With that in mind we’ve picked out some key outerwear pieces from our collection to give you some background on the clothes themselves, our inspiration and some ways to wear them.
That said, our ethos behind this range is very much ‘wear it how you want’.
Post-Mod vintage leather
Thanks to Brando, McQueen and James Dean the leather jacket has remained a staple of men’s wardrobes since the 50s. This season’s Black Label soft tan jacket has been constructed with aniline leather. The dyeing process results in a natural grainy look and means you can see every pore of the material itself, adding an edge of sophistication to a casual classic.
Re-engineered classic tailoring
This seasons Black Label puts a modern twist on the traditional single breasted overcoat. With 100% wool with military button cuff and front fastenings, all PG logo branded, it’s also cut with a 60s frock coat silhouette.
It’s also a reliable medium-weight outer layer that’s perfect for the all-too-typical inbetween bouts of weather we’re prone to on these shores.
This corduroy military inspired jacket comes with a mandarin collar, chest, patch and hip pockets – all resplendent with military tape detail and buttons throughout.
The key here is to keep all of your layers fairly simple. The jacket is the star so let it shine. T-shirts, shirts and jumpers are all good and maybe throw in a pair of brown or black desert boots if you want to lift everything. It also works beautifully layered with pastels and paisleys on a night out.
The timeless icons
Bomber jackets are now a wardrobe staple and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon. They’re authentic, smart and carry bags of attitude.
Our Black Label bomber is a statement piece inspired by 60s psychedelia thanks to its front and sleeve floral jacquard pattern. This year’s interpretation also features military tape detail on the overarm while the ribbed hem and cuffs add a touch of casual finesse.
Elsewhere we’ve developed a luxe velour track top with lace trim detail on the overarm in navy and toffee inspired by an image of Keith Moon.
The outerwear essential
The importance of a well-fitting overcoat can’t be underestimated. It’s fundamental to any discerning man’s wardrobe.
For the 2018 Black Label collection we’ve opted for the classic Prince of Wales check in a 60s inspired slim fit. Details are vital to a decent overcoat and this year’s has concealed front buttons with a jet opening and an under collar neck tab and buckle. The fabric itself comes from the British mill of William Halstead in Bradford.
In a practical sense this overcoat will keep you warm and dry but offers so much more than just functionality. This mac is perfect with a dapper suit or casual straight lines underneath. Accessorising properly with small details will also elevate the look. Don’t shy away from teaming it with a hat or scarf and, if you’re wearing it to work, think about teaming it with a smart leather bag.
